Philippe Starck
Born in Paris in 1949, Philippe Starck is the star of the
design world, attracting acclaim and criticism in equal measure. His high profile media
presence as the stereotypical designer has reduced him to a figure of fun but his work
varied and prolific. Beginning as a product designer in the mid sixties he moved into
interior design for Parisian night-clubs in the seventies. Having set-up Starck Products
in 1979 he won an important commission in 1982 to design the private bedroom of Francois
Mitterand in the Elyssee. During the eighties, he produced bold new interpretations for furniture, domestic appliances and everyday objects as well as ground-breaking interior designs for cafes, restaurants and hotels in Paris, New York and Tokyo which were celebrated for their theatricality and wit. Towards the end of the eighties he turned his attention to architecture, particularly in Japan where he produced buildings that looked more like giant products than conventional architecture. Through the nineties Starck has become increasingly diverse in his work with projects ranging from museums to motorbikes. |
